Arable farmer's drive to boost threatened farmland birds

Down Farm at Kilmeston in Hampshire boasts one of the highest densities of breeding lapwings in the county. Threatened skylarks also breed here with large numbers feeding among the weedy stubbles during winter, along with linnets and goldfinches. Arable farmer Neil Saunders is keen to highlight that wildlife friendly practices can go hand in hand with commercial farming.

Neil and his father David practice integrated crop management, adhering to strict guidance on environmental care. Grassy field margins act as refuges for insects, birds and mammals. Crops are rotated helping to keep the soil in good condition and reducing the need for pesticides and fertilisers
