Southampton City Council

  • The revised Southampton local plan contains chapters on sustainable development principles and the natural environment. Biodiversity is specifically considered in housing and other policy areas.

  • Biodiversity is included in the city’s community strategy. Key action includes increasing the area of greenspace managed for wildlife.

  • Recent work at Southampton Common SSSI includes renovation of the ornamental lake (in partnership with the environment agency), creation of a new water body for amphibians and tree management to increase the area of heath and acid grassland.

  • Biodiversity considerations are included in a new sustainability checklist that has been compiled for use in the development control process.

  • As part of a review of Southampton’s Nature Conservation Strategy, community and environmental groups have been asked for information and views on Southampton’s Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation.
